Why goniophotometer testing is essential for LED manufacturers

A goniophotometer is a device that measures light output from a light source at various angles. To measure light, goniophotometer employ goniometers to measure angles and photometers to measure light. Similarly, the goniophotometer instrument is equipped to measure light and angle. Goniophotometers measure how evenly light from a lamp or light fixture is dispersed over a room.

Photometric characteristics and dispersion of light from various angles are assessed using a goniophotometer. Candelas, lux, and cd/m2 brightness may all be measured using the Goniophotometer, which can also measure light intensity.

Instrumentation used to evaluate LEDs often includes the Type C goniophotometer and an integrating sphere. Using the Goniophotometer to determine light direction and color temperature from the integrating sphere, Architects may use the Goniophotometer to project light pathways and decide where to position lights when a product is placed in a 360° plot, for example.

The functions of many pieces of equipment often cross over one another. In the case of LED lights or small luminaires, total luminous flux may be assessed using the Goniophotometer. In the case of bigger luminaires, the integrating sphere is more appropriate. An AC/DC voltage source, voltage regulator, and temperature probes are all required to power the lights and the Goniophotometer to carry out this and additional tests.

Goniophotometers and types
There is a wide range of goniophotometers available, ranging in size and form from desktop devices to machines with a cross-section of 15-20 meters. LM-79 requires a type C goniophotometer to assure accuracy and consistency.
During these tests, the DUT is maintained stationary while sensors on various axes revolve around it, measuring the light intensity it emits at regular intervals. While the DUT moves concerning the sensors in goniophotometers with kinds of A and B, it remains fixed in goniophotometers with type C. LISUN has the best type C goniophotometer.
Due to the cooling effect that occurs as air moves around an LED light fitting, this might lead to errors in measurements. To minimize this impact, type C goniophotometer hold the DUT in place while only the sensors move.

How test performed
Light intensity data may determine a light source’s lumen output. Differences in light intensity have occurred between sources of light that are oriented in various ways. Using these numbers, light output in lumens may be calculated using mathematical computations. Accuracy will be excellent if this method is used to measure lumens.
Several variables affect goniophotometer readings. A dark environment is required for the goniophotometer testing. The test equipment maker determines the room’s specifications. This may happen if the manufacturer’s instructions do not set up the darkroom.

To do the test successfully, the temperature in the room should be 25°C. You may adjust the room size according to the kind of bulb being tested and the testing gear. When painting the room’s walls, you should choose a flat black paint that does not reflect.

Goniophotometers are used in the lighting and automotive industries to conduct performance assessments of light equipment. In addition, goniophotometers are used to measure the light emitted by traffic signal bulb luminaires.
Reflective traffic signs and other reflective materials may also be measured by goniophotometers and devices using light.
