Surge Generator Design Scheme for Energy Measurement Test

IEC 60601-1:2006 stipulates that the armarium connected to the patient should use defibrillation method (namely, the armarium can be connected to the defibrillation and the patient so as to resist the high energy released by the defibrillator from damage.)

IEC 60601-1 includes the general requirements for safety of the medical facilities. Over the years, these requirements have been improved and become more inclusive. Surge generator was included in IEC 60601-1 standard many years ago, surge test aims to ensure that all medical facilities connected to the patient can normally work after putting the defibrillation pulse on the patient.

IEC 60601-2006 put forward the requirement of energy measurement test requirement, aiming to ensure the consumption part of the defibrillation energy of the medical facilities connecting to the patient will not exceed 10% of the total defibrillation energy. On the whole, energy measurement test was ever included in IEC 60601-2-49 standard, but now it is added in IEC 60601-1-2006 standard. The two standards used the same 5-kV capacity, but different capacity value of other parts.  This entire test is included in the version 2 of IEC 60601-1, and the test method is different with the previous one.

In order to get accurate test result, energy measurement test requires using different test method to revise the surge generator. The old generator used for common mode and differential mode test can not make the proper evaluation for the energy measurement test. If you want to know whether the generator is available, you can check the front panel and the back panel to see whether the node configuration between 40Ω and 100Ω resistance has the energy metering ports. If the generator configuration has an energy metering port, we must check the pulse transfer and the resistance between the port and the earth so as to ensure the resistance is within 5% of 100Ω nominal value. If surge generator can meet the two conditions, we can use it to do the energy measurement test.
