Based on risk criteria and exposure limits of ultraviolet (UV) light source prescribed in the new IEC and Chinese National Standards, this paper describes something about evaluating hazards to human eyes and skin. Then it describes the way and principle about testing UV light source. In the end, it shows and analyzes the results of testing, provides references for using UV light source safely.
International Commission on Illumination (CIE) divides the ultraviolet spectrum into three wave band in order to discuss the UVR biological effect: UV-A 320~400nm，UV-B 280~320nm，UV-C 100~280nm. But the wavelength below 180nm is easy to be absorbed by the air, so there is no actual biological significance.
Not only some ultraviolet radiation ray, but also some artificial light source such as the UV lamp, electric arc can also produce the ultraviolet radiation. Currently, UV application has been developed rapidly, such as photographic paint or printing ink and other photo chromic materials’ curing, photoengraving, photoetching, copy, skin disease and surgical treatment, sterilization, health care, fluorescent analysis.
However, too much UV radiation will cause the negative effects on the human health. Therefore, people have to prevent the harmfulness of the UV ray when then people is developing and using it. Eyes and skin is most easily harmed by UVR radiation, because they are entirely exposed in the air, we cam also see that the internal month may also be radiated from some dental problems. However, as long as people can control the UV radiation in the appropriate range, people can have a normal life and work under the UV radiation, and will not be harmed by the radiation, that is also the aim of studying the ultraviolet light band safety.
